Past Exhibits of the New Jersey Scout Museum

troop neckerchiefs

This case shows a small sampling of the wide variety of troop neckerchiefs that have been made over the years. Nearly every troop used to have its own distinctive neckerchief. This tradition lessened in the 1970s when bolo ties became popular. Now all Scout shirts are made with collars and so the neckerchief is an option rather than a necessity.

On top of the case is an exhibit, made for the "OA Museum" at the 2004 NOAC, which addresses many of the questions surrounding the mysterious first patch of Na Tsi Hi lodge. That patch, on which the lodge name is misspelled NA-TASI-HI, has puzzled historians for years.

scrapbooks

The Museum is now the repository for Monmouth Council's archives. This includes several old scrapbooks which date back as far as the 1920s.

Another important part of the archives is a collection of several hundred photographs from the council's long history. Many of the illustrations in the book Images of America: Monmouth Council Boy Scouts were drawn from this vast archive.

Girl Scouts

This display showcases the proud history of Girl Scouting. It includes several Handbooks, a hat studded with "swaps", a beautiful vintage photo of a Girl Scout, and a variety of memorabilia.

camp patches

These cases show a selection of camp patches.

On top of the case is a display board showing the locations and patches of every known camp of Monmouth Council. We would like to develop similar displays for every council in New Jersey.
